Declaration on accessibility
As the operator, the Verein für kontrollierte alternative Tierhaltungsformen e.V. (KAT) endeavours to design this website and integrated digital services in accordance with the relevant accessibility regulations. The following legal provisions apply to us:
The Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG) is the transposition of the European Accessibility Act into German law. It was passed on 16 June 2021 and will come into force on 28 June 2025 after a transitional period. It obliges German companies to ensure accessibility in accordance with the European Accessibility Act. The EN 301 549 standard describes the procedure for ensuring that digital products and services are accessible under the European Accessibility Act. For websites and applications, EN 301 549 directly references the international standard Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA.

Status of compatibility with the requirements
We attach great importance to the barrier-free design of this website. Our aim is to ensure equal access to our information and services for all users. The website has been optimised to comply with international accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1). Accordingly, an accessible website should fulfil four principles:
Perceivability: Information and components of the user interface must be presentable for users in such a way that they can perceive them. For example, visual content must also be able to be displayed for visually impaired and blind people via alternatives.
Usability: All website functions must be designed in such a way that they can also be used by people with disabilities. Possible interactions must be clearly recognisable.
Comprehensibility: Users must be able to understand all information and the operation of the user interface.
Robustness: Websites must be able to be reliably interpreted by different end devices, including assistive technologies.
The following measures have been implemented to ensure the accessibility of our website:
1. Clear, semantically correct structure
The website uses HTML5 with a clean and semantically correct structure that ensures a logical and easy-to-understand sequence of content. This means that the site is optimised for screen readers and other aids.
2. Navigation and user-friendliness
Skip links: There is a "skip link" at the top of each page to allow users in screen reader mode to navigate directly to the main content.
ARIA tag optimisation: Interactive elements such as the navigation or the cookie banner are provided with ARIA roles and attributes. These ensure a precise description of the content and structure for screen readers.
Focus management: When opening and closing the main menu and the cookie banner, focus and tab index attributes are specifically controlled to ensure seamless operation, even for keyboard users.
Deactivation of Javascript: The website and in particular the navigation can also be used if Javascript is deactivated in the browser settings.
3. Customisable font sizes
The integrated control in your browser allows users to customise the font size on the website. The customisation is easily accessible and ensures a pleasant reading experience.
4. Responsive design
The website automatically adapts to different screen sizes and offers a complete and easily accessible user interface even on mobile devices.
5. Alternative image descriptions
Images on the website are labelled with alt attributes that describe the content of the image. This helps users who rely on screen readers and improves accessibility.
6. Forms and input elements
Labelling and instructions: Form elements are clearly labelled and provided with instructions to ensure smooth interaction.
Checkboxes and buttons: All relevant buttons and checkboxes are clearly labelled with additional tooltips.
7. Incompatibility with accessibility legislation
The content listed below is not yet compliant with the relevant accessibility legislation: Individual download files in Word and PDF formats are not yet accessible.
Evaluation methods
The accessibility of this website was tested and optimised using the following online methods, among others:
